Stairway to Heaven, Mesopotamia

Oct 2007.

We just finished a mission near Tallil AB.

A few minutes later…

I was standing atop the great ziggurat of the ancient city of Ur. Overlooking modern Nasiriya Iraq, this structure is literally a stairway to heaven once dedicated to Nanna the Sumerian goddess of the moon. While the ziggurat was largely reconstructed by Saddam Hussein to symbolically bolster his legitimacy by tying his name to great works of Mesopotamia, many significant archaeological sites located around this (pyramid were spared from pillaging as a result of US, and later Australian and Romanian, force security patrols.
